Gulp!

Why did you look? Why do you always have to look?

I love watching horror movies. Even when I’m terrified and I know I will not get any sleep that night, I have to see it. It’s a morbid curiosity that eggs me on; that makes me peek through eyes that closed shut when the last chump was murdered; that makes a shiver go down my spine when the spooky background music reaches a crescendo

Even as far back as a kid, I remember quite clearly hiding behind the curtain when we were watching the Invisible Man. The whole ‘I can’t see him’ gag was wasted on me as I found the movie quite scary. Granted I was about 6 at the time and someone jumping out from behind a door yelling Boo was the most terrifying thing to ever happen to me, I do remember peeking out from behind the curtain, my eyes tightly shut and then slowly trying to see what was going on.

This ‘watching-when-one-shouldn’t’ tendency isn’t just restricted to me. It also seems to afflict the characters in horror movies. I mean, ok I watch horror flicks but if the light goes out in my house during a stormy night and my torch isn’t working, I would have more sense than to go exploring in the basement!

Of course, I have no sense of judgement when it comes to horror movies watching Hindi and English, well-known and obscure directors, older clunkier versions and newer fancier films with equal trepidation-cum-anticipation. Whether its Vaastushastra or Rakht, The Village or Dawn of the Dead, Scream or Final Destination, I watch it all! The best part of my appreciation for all things scary is that even movies with spooky scenes like The Sixth Sense send me into delicious shivers and keep me at the edge of my seat.

My favourite scary movie is undoubtedly The Ring (the English version) – the first of my adult forays into late-night shows. I saw the movie at a late-night show wanting to preserve the atmosphere but paid the price when I stayed up (after the movie, from 1:30 am to 5 am) all night in case a girl crept into the room via a videotape. Other movies I re-call giving a good fright are Identity (the ending is brilliant) and Saw (simply brutal).

This multiplex-producer strike must end!
